School starts
10/09/2006
I just got back from my first day at school. The rhythm seems really steady, and this was confirmed by other students who've been here for a while. There were several courses to choose from, I picked the most intense: the "Acceleration program", that brings students from a beginner level to the 1-kyuu in only 18 months! I could hardly believe it was possible but again, this has been confirmed by other students. I know a guy who started in january as a total beginner and he's already ready for the 2-kyuu. But he's now taking full-time private lessons!!! And anyway, it requires a huge amount of personal work
So what's that kyuu thing? Well it is just a suffix used to designate a level and in this case, it is related to the JLPT ("Japanese language proficiency test"). As the name suggests, it is designed to asset the Japanese level for non-native speakers. The exam takes place once a year in december and there are actually four different exams, ranging from level 4 (4-kyuu), which corresponds to advanced beginner level, to level 1 (the infamous 1-kyuu), that requires a perfect mastery of the language, and a deep knowledge of all 1945 official characters...To pass the test, one needs to score at least 60% (70% for the 1-kyuu...). This post gives more details about the JLPT.
Well, enough said, it's time for me to study!
As promised, here's my presidential suite, before cleaning:
