Yufuin

While in Beppu, I did a one-day trip to Yufuin, in the same area. Yufuin is another onsen resort, although it is much more picturesque. It is really the countryside:

This is lake Kinrinko:

Naturally warm, it is ideal to heat your hands by a cold winter day...
Or you could also use that water, clean and VERY hot:

Thansk to the bicycle I rent at the station, I managed to escape the most touristic spots and explore more remote areas, allowing me to find that typical, delicious soba (noodles) restaurant for instance:

I also got very lucky, although it didn't start off very well as I went to a "flower park" that, because of the winter, wasn't very spectacular to say the least. However, I talked with the gardener and one of his friends in the greenhouse:

They were really pleased not only to see a customer, but also that I was a foreigner speaking Japanese. It turned out that the friend was the owner of a nearby, high-end ryokan and kindly offered me a bath. I didn't need persuading and enjoyed that private rotenburo (outdoor bath):

The ryokan was really beautiful, with traditional rooms:

Meals are also served directly in the room and most rooms have their own private bath:
